Literature Text

Many, many years ago, there was a boy. He was an orphan. He wasn't abandoned by his parents or anything, he just somehow appeared at the orphanage one day. The people who worked at the orphanage tried to find any records of him. They could find none. No one had ever heard of him or seen him before, not even the busy body- know it all ladies that seemed to rule the town with secrets. The people who ran the orphanage tried countless times to have the boy tell them where he came from. But all he would answer with is " I do not know what my past was and I do not care to know. " After many failed attempts at the boy's background, the people who ran the orphanage just gave up.
Five years later the boy is now sixteen years old. He still lives at the orphanage, but as a care taker. He had given up all hope of someone adopting him years ago. He saw many friends and playmates disappear out the big wooden doors with parents. The parents always seemed to go for the cute kids or the girls. Sometimes as the parents were leaving, he would hear them whisper "that boy looks like a trouble maker. I don't want him in my house." After over hearing this, he shouted at an old man "I have done nothing wrong!!" The old man, startled by the outburst, left without adopting a child.
The boy was now busy cleaning up the large dining hall. There were at least 100 chairs and tables scattered throughout the room. It was his job to wipe tables, push in chairs and sweep and mop the floor. As he was finishing up, a woman burst through the doorway. "Happy Birthday!" she shouted. The caretaker was such a wonderful woman. When each child was dropped off here, she would try to find out their birth date. If none could be found, she made one up.  People had told her the smart and money saving way would to have all their birthdays on the same day and then be done with it. But she had told them that she wanted each child to feel unique and special especially on their birthdays. That is why she tried to have each child's birthday on different days. Today was the boys birthday.
"Thank you!" he ran up and hugged her.
"No need to thank me" she replied as she pulled out a cake with 16 candles on it.
He smiled at her and then went back to work.
"If I were you, I wouldn't wait to eat it. The rest of the kids will be coming down for lunch soon and might want some"
He laughed and walked back to the cake and blew out the candles. When the smoke cleared, he took a giant bite. "That's all I'm having for now; might spoil my lunch."
The woman smiled and left the room.
Lightening flashed and thunder clapped outside, shaking the whole house. The flash lit up the now dark room for a second and the boy noticed a figure in the corner who hadn't been there before. He thought it to be one of the kids. so he went over to comfort them. "Hey, it's okay" he said as he got closer " Thunder storms are fun. We can it around the  fire and..." he was cut off when he realized the figure in the corner wasn't a kid but a man. No men worked in the orphanage, but maybe this man wanted to adopt a kid. "Sorry, sir," he said "I thought you were a kid. Are you here to see a kid?"
"No" the man said in a barely audible voice. "I am here to see you!" The man then grabbed the boys upper arms and images shot across the boys field of vision. Images of when he was younger, before he came to the orphanage. Images of his parents, images of their house. the boy was filled with happy/ sad emotions. He DID have a family! but why and how did he end up here? one final image shot across. It was a darker colored image that was hard to make out, but when he did, he was horrified. he had killed someone! Waves of shock and nausea rushed over him as he reeled away from the man, hoping the images would go with the man. But it was now engraved in his mind.
"Happy Birthday, kid!" the man smirked and then was gone in the blink of an eye.
The boy curled up on the floor, quietly sobbing until the storm passed.
After what seemed like an eternity, the boy slowly got up off the floor. His muscles sore from the hard cold floor and his body shaking sobs. After a couple of wobbly steps, he made his way to the stairs. A couple of kids walked around the hall. One girl, Maddie, stopped and asked him if he was alright. He silently nodded and continued down the hall to his room. He shared the room with 8 other boys near his own age, but thankfully none of them were there. He crumpled when he got to his bed and fell asleep right away. When he woke up, it was dark out. He rolled over and saw a couple kids and the woman who ran the orphanage. They all looked really worried.
'did they find out what a monster I am?' he thought to himself. He quickly sat up.
"Are you alright?" the woman asked, feeling his forehead.
She thought he was just sick. He glanced at the children standing behind her. They looked just as worried. The boy wanted to tell the woman every thing that had happened since he last saw her. The woman and the boy, although separated by twenty years, had a somewhat close bond. They were really close. But looking back at the children, the boy knew he couldn't, so he lied. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just had a little headache and came to rest. I'm sorry I startled all of you."
The woman gave him a hug then ushered the children out. "Get some rest," she whispered over her shoulder.
Once the boy heard that every one was down stairs, he grabbed his suitcase and what little items he had and climbed out the window.
"I'm sorry" he said looking back at his now naked corner of the room. Then he slipped down the fire escape and into the night.
I started writing this last night with my boyfriend. i wanted to blow him away with an amazing plot- filled, suspense- dripping story. It's not finished yet, this is only the first chapter or so.
Now, you as the reader have an opportunity to name the story. Leave a comment on what you want the story to be named. I will choose the best one. Best one gets a mention in description, a llama and a watch ( i hope thats enough motivation!!)
